Turning Point
Oprah said her father saved her life. He was a very strict man. He would always provide her with guidance, books, and rules. He would have Oprah do weekly book reports and she went to dinner until she learned five new vocabulary each day. All this helped Oprah through out her school years.
She became an amazing student. She participated in debate clubs , student council and drama club. One day she won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University by wining in an Elks club speaking contest. After that she was invited to a white House Conference on Youth.
She then was crowned Miss Fire Prevention by WVOL, and she was hired by the station to read afternoon newscast. She became Miss Black Nashville and Miss Tennessee during her freshman year at Tennessee State. The Nashville Columbia offered her a job once. She turned it down twice but she finally took this advice from her speech teacher which was to remind her that job offers from CBS were the reason people go to college. This show was seen each evening on WTVF-TV, and Oprah was the first African American to participate in the evening news.
